Adolescent Orthodontics

What is the difference between Early Treatment (Phase 1) and Phase 2 Treatment?

Phase 1 Treatment occurs when there is a mix of baby and adult teeth, while Phase 2 Treatment occurs when all the adult teeth are erupted during adolescence. Phase 1 Treatment is only recommended when there are certain problems with growth and development and will involve appliances and/or partial braces. Phase 2 Treatment is usually necessary following Phase 1 and will involve appliances and/or a full set of braces on adult teeth.

What is Phase 2 and Comprehensive Treatment?

Phase 2 and Comprehensive Treatment both occur when all of the adult teeth are erupted. The term “Phase 2 Treatment” is used when a patient has previously had a round of Phase 1 Treatment, while the term “Comprehensive Treatment” is used when a patient is completing treatment in a single stage. Sometimes, the terms are used interchangeably. After your child’s first visit at the age of 7, Dr. Douglas will customize your child’s plan according to their individual needs so that either Phase 2 or Comprehensive treatment is effectively and efficiently delivered during adolescent years.

When does Phase 2 or Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment start?

The most common time is between the ages of 11 and 15. By the age of 12, most of the adult teeth have erupted, so crooked teeth, gaps, and bad bites can be easily detected. Noticing these problems, parents often seek orthodontic treatment for their children around this age.

This age range is a great time for orthodontic treatment because many children and teens experience the same, so there is less social pressure than at an adult age. In fact, many children and teens want braces because they see their friends wearing them. We have many adult patients coming in for consultations, regretting not having completed treatment when they were teenagers.

How long does Phase 2 or Comprehensive Treatment take?

Typically, 12-24 months. However, this can vary depending on each individual’s needs.
