Adult Orthodontics

Can adults get Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes. Orthodontic treatment is not just for children and teens. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists states that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. With recent advances in technology, adults are able to receive orthodontic care with reduced treatment time, improved comfort, and improved esthetics. At Smile Story Orthodontics, we use the latest technology to make sure our patients, no matter what age, have an excellent experience.

What are common reasons Adults consider Orthodontic Treatment?

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps or spacing between teeth may cause food impaction
  • A bad bite or teeth fitting together incorrectly
  • Desire for a confident smile
  • Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment
  • Jaw-related bite problems

Are there benefits to Orthodontic Treatment other than a beautiful smile?

Yes. In many cases, Orthodontic Treatment can help increase the longevity of natural teeth. This is achieved by allowing healthy chewing, making brushing/flossing easier, reducing tooth wear and tear, and improving the health of gums.

What are my options other than metal braces?

You can receive orthodontic treatment as an adult without metal braces! At Smile Story Orthodontics, we offer removable clear aligners (often referred to as “Invisalign”) and tooth-colored braces as alternatives to metal braces.

Do I need treatment if my problems are mild?

If your orthodontic problems are very mild, treatment may not be absolutely necessary. At Smile Story Orthodontics, we offer limited treatment options for minor alignment of teeth. If you are considering treatment, take advantage of our complimentary consultations and hear how you may potentially benefit from treatment. Dr. Douglas will be honest and transparent about your options so that you feel comfortable, not pressured.

Does Orthodontic Treatment hurt more as an adult?

No. Orthodontic treatment is no more uncomfortable in adults than in children and teenagers. Regardless of age, some soreness is expected after adjustment appointments.
